Today it is the 10th of December. A day that has a special meaning to me and many many others. Today it is the birthday of something very special. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. On the 10th of December in 1948 the declaration was adopted by the UN General Assembly. The declaration was a reaction to the events that happened during world war II, and ever since there have been many events that violate the declaration. Even today there is a peaceful fight going on in favor of the human rights that have been made official with this declaration. Even today we fight, in order to support and help those who see their rights being violated, who suffer and who speak up for their rights, for equality, for a better world.

With this special day many special events take place all over the world. In the Netherlands I will be a part of the 24-hour writing marathon in Weert, organized by Amnesty International. We will write letters for 24 hours in a row in order to stand up for those who see their rights being violated. There will be interviews and performances and a lot of good conversations with the people who join in on this special marathon.

I know today is a work day. A day that can go by like many others. I know there are planes to catch and bills to pay. I know there is so much going on that it is easy to forget about the importance of our human rights. Let’s don’t. Let’s celebrate together. Let’s remember. And let’s help and support those who are in need.

What can you do today, to honor the human rights?

  • Take some time to actually read the declaration (in English or Dutch for example)
  • Visit one of the marathon locations, in Weert, Amsterdam or Maastricht. You are welcome for as long as you want to stay.
  • Install the Urgent Action app (Dutch Link) developed by Amnesty International. It will allow you to take action every month with just a little bit of effort.
  • Participate in the marathon from the comforts of your home or work location.
  • Talk about human rights with the people you meet today.
  • Tweet, chat, post, share information about the marathon to get others involved too.

Of course there are many other things you can do. This little list is just to give you some ideas. What are you doing today?
